This Master’s degree intends to qualify and specialize current and/or future technicians of central, regional and municipal services and agencies, as well as companies and institutions with functions and responsibilities in the areas of emergency planning, general relief operations and forest fires in particular, prevention strategies, spatial planning and the safety of people, goods and environment.
SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED
The Master's Degree in Risks and Civil Protection course aims to respond to problems of increasing complexity in contemporary societies, faced with the growth of large population clusters and physical structures exposed to natural and anthropogenic disasters, as well as their domino effects on communities and the environment. This Master's program aims to qualify and specialize current and/or future technicians of central, regional and municipal services and bodies, as well as of companies and institutions with roles and responsibilities in the areas of emergency planning, relief/rescue operations in general (forest fires, in particular), prevention strategies, land use planning, and safety of people, goods and the environment.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
This Master's course seeks to achieve the following objectives: to develop the individual skills of critical analysis, logical reasoning, understanding and practical resolution of problems; to provide skills for autonomous acquisition of new theoretical and practical knowledge; to raise awareness for the main aspects of ethical, environmental, social, economic, cultural and civilizational nature, pertaining to the professional exercise; to provide the conditions for critical thinking and research in the field of risks and civil protection, with an aim for the best solutions and the innovation of safety systems; to ensure a training in the curricular units (CUs) that, for their content, quality, scope and importance (ECTS - European Credit and Accumulation Transfer System), are recognized as equivalents to the ones in other European universities, thus allowing for academic mobility, employment and job flexibility in the European space.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This Master's course is aimed at Graduates in scientific areas related to Civil Protection (Biology, Social Sciences, Geology, Geography, Land Use Planning, Hydrology, Climatology, Civil Protection Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Forest Engineering, etc.) and also specialties involved in land management and emergency planning (Economics, Management, Law). It is a course aimed at a wide range of professionals, such as: Technicians of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, and of the District Command for Relief Operations; Technicians of Municipal Civil Protection Services and other technicians from local administrations- regional and central; Civil protection agents and security forces and services; Professors of subjects related to natural and technological risks, or heads of courses, clubs and projects about risks and civil protection; Members of NGOs; etc.

This course aims to prepare senior officials for an activity of recognized social and humanitarian importance, in Portugal and in the world. To this end, the course offers a solid and adequate multidisciplinary training that will provide its graduates with a wide range of professional activities, such as: Civil Protection Management in national and international entities; Safety and Protection Management of public and private organizations and companies; Safety and Risk Management Consultancy; Education and Training; Land Use Planning, Environment and Natural resources, in the areas of Risk Prevention and Emergency Planning; Emergency Planning and Management, in the areas of analysis, identification and mitigation of collective risks and attenuation actions of their effects, and of protection, rescue and relief of people and goods; Industry and Marketing of safety products; Insurance companies; Scientific research and technological development.

ACCESS REQUIREMENTS
The Access Regime for International Students is aimed at all applicants who do not have Portuguese nationality. This regime does not apply to the students who: are a European Union Member state national or, despite not being a Member state national, have continuously been living in Portugal for more than two years.
Admission through this regime is subject to:
- Verification of academic qualifications through: Document proof and a written exam on the subjects of the access exams required for the study cycle – in accordance with the application guide of the general regime.
- Verification of language knowledge through document proof.
- The written exam consists of a written test of knowledge on the language in which the study cycle is taught. For both types of verification, an interview will always be conducted.

- Transcript of Records from the country of origin or a diploma that attests the successful completion of an educational program and entitles the student to apply for higher education in the country where those certificates were issued;
- Portuguese secondary education diploma or legally equivalent qualification;

- Documentary proof for the verification of language knowledge (when applicable)
PREREQUISITES
Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent; Holders of a relevant academic, scientific or professional curriculum in the field.

Various equipment available in the chemistry, physics and safety and protection laboratories; teaching material is provided by the teachers of each Curricular Unit.
